The reduction of gastric acidity by back-diffusion by hydrogen ions through the mucosa.

چکیده
It is generally believed that the hydrochloric acid solution secreted by the oxyntic cells is isotonic with the blood, and that the reduction of the acidity observed in the gastric juice is due to subsequent dilution and neutralization by other secretions (see Babkin, 1944). Teorell (1933), using anaesthetized or decerebrate cats whose stomachs were tied at both ends, observed a rapid decrease in the acidity of hydrochloric acidsolutions injected into the stomach, without a corresponding reduction of the volume of the injected iluid. From these results, andfrommodel experiments with artificial membranes, he inferred that the reduction of the acidity of the gastric juice was due mainly to the diffusion of H+ ions through the gastric mucosa into the blood. However, diffusion of H+ ions through living gastric mucosa has not so far been demonstrated, and this paper describes an attempt to investigate the diffusion of H+ ions through isolated amphibian gastric mucosa. The results show that H+ ions can diffuse through surviving mucosa and that the rates of diffusion are linearly related to the H+ ion concentration of the solution in contact with the secretory side of the tissue (see Teorell, 1933, 1939).

Is the apparent hyposecretion of acid by patients with gastric ulcer a consequence of a broken barrier to diffusion of hydrogen ions into the gastric mucosa?
The recent papers by Johnson, Love, Rogers, and Wyatt (1964) and Langman, Hansky, Drury, and Jones (1964) clearly distinguish between ulcers of the oxyntic gland area of the stomach on one hand and ulcers of the pyloric gland area and of the duodenum on the other. The former are true 'gastric' ulcers. The fluid recovered from the stomachs of patients with gastric ulcers is large in volume but l...

Objective(s): This study was performed to investigate the effects of mucosal acidification on mRNA expression and protein synthesis of cystathionine gamma lyase (CSE), cystathionine beta synthase (CBS), and mucosal release of H2S in gastric mucosa in rats. Materials and Methods:Thirty-two rats were randomly assigned into 4 groups (8 in each), including: the control group, HCl (10 mM) treated g...
متن کاملTopical effects of 16,16 dimethyl prostaglandin E2 on gastric acid secretion and mucosal permeability to hydrogen ions in dogst
The effects of luminal instillation of 16,16 dimethyl PGE2 (dmPGE2) on gastric acid secretion and back diffusion of H+ were studied in anaesthetised dogs which were prepared with a segment of the greater curvature of the stomach mounted in a double lumen chamber. This model permitted simultaneous evaluation of two segments of mucosa, one control and the other test, supplied by the same vascular...

متن کاملThe effect of bile on the gastric mucosal barrier in the presence and after blockade of normal gastric acidity.
Induced physiologic changes in the gastric mucosa was investigated both in the presence of normal gastric acidity and after parietal cell vagotomy (PCV), in dogs. Cholecystogastrostomy and common bile duct ligation was performed in eleven and PCV was added to this procedure in five dogs. During histopathological examination, 70 days after the procedure, both groups proved to have superficial ga...
